St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis told NCT that one person had died in the Arabi neighborhood.

Authorities survey damage in the lower Ninth Ward district Tuesday, March 22, 2022, in New Orleans, after severe storms tore through the area.

McInnis did not have details on the death and said parish officials have several reports of residents going to the hospital, but there are no specific numbers on those injured.

Some houses were “torn off their foundations and left on the street,” he said.

Tornadoes damage approximately 1,000 homes in Texas and now the storm generates more in Mississippi

McInnis previously described the damage in Arabi as extensive and significant.

Emergency services are conducting search and rescue efforts. That includes units from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the agency said.

The National Weather Service described the tornado that hit the New Orleans area as “large and extremely dangerous.”

Facebook user Crash Harlowe shared a video after the storm passed with the following caption:

“Arabi/W. Chalmette has no electricity. I just ran over a power line. Some kind of wind source just blew down Aycock Street from Judge Perez all the way to Saint Claude… If I had left five minutes sooner I would have been right in the middle,” he wrote. “Trees down all over Judge Perez, I’m still trying to see if I can get through it to work I already had to turn around.”

The National Weather Service reported that the tornado passed through a portion of St. Bernard Parish and neighboring Orleans Parish. WDSU said the tornado moved through the Lower Ninth Ward and many homes were in darkness.

According to PowerOutage.us, there were more than 10,000 customers without power in Orleans and St. Bernard Parish.

The weather service said there were two reports of tornadoes in St. Tammany Parish.

A debris-lined street is seen in the Lower Ninth Ward, Tuesday, March 22, 2022, in New Orleans, after severe storms hit the area.

There have been no reports of injuries or major damage after a possible tornado hit Jefferson Parish, according to a tweet from the local government.

“Our Jefferson Parish Fire Services Department is reporting no major structural damage or injuries from the tornado at this time,” the tweet read.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a tweet that state agencies are assisting local agencies with damage assessments.

“My prayers are with you in southeast Louisiana tonight. Please stay safe,” she said.
