Suspected gunmen set vehicles on fire after confrontation in western Mexico

Presumed members of organized crime set fire to three vehicles in two places in the municipality of Zapopan, in the state of Jalisco, western Mexico, after a shootout with the Army in the road to the municipality of Ixtlahuacán del Río.

In a message on social networks, the governor of the entity, Enrique Alfaro, confirmed that the burning of the vehicles was a strategy to prevent the passage of the security corporations that came to support the place of confrontation.

“As a result of a confrontation on the border between Ixtlahuacán del Río and Cuquío, between the Army and members of organized crime, (these) set fire to vehicles on the highway to Saltillo, at the entrance to the city, to try to block the passage of corporations,” Alfaro reported.

He added that no injuries or deaths were reported and that the situation had been controlled by civil protection agents and security authorities.

The strategic security coordinator of Jalisco, Ricardo Sánchez, announced, also on social networks, that an operation of the Armed Forces and the National Guard in the town of Cuquío caused the shooting with organized crime groups that reached the limits with the municipality of Ixtlahuacán del Río, about 50 kilometers away from the metropolitan area of ​​Guadalajara.

He confirmed that the two blockades occurred at the entrances to the city through the municipality of Zapopan without any injuries so far.

Around 8:00 p.m., a group of men set fire to a passenger bus on the highway to Saltillo, at one of the entrances to the north of the city; Minutes later, another bus and a car were set on fire in a neighborhood near another of the highway accesses.

He said that the fires were put out and the buses were removed to normalize the circulation of vehicles.

He added that the security cabinet established communication with the federal and municipal authorities to reinforce the operations.

Last March, blockades were registered in the municipality of Tamazula, in the south of the entity, after various clashes between the National Guard and organized crime groups.
