Must Read

The Asian operations unit of Nikkei, a giant in the media sector, was hit by an attack ransomware on May 13 last. To detect the incident, an internal control system that discovered unauthorized access to one of the servers of the headquarters of Singapore of the company. The server was shut down immediately, along with other measures to minimize the impact of the attack on the operations of the organization. The investigations are still ongoing, so it is not known whether the hackers managed to gain access to the data of the Nikkei customers they were likely targeting. In any case, it seems that there have not been data leak.

Ransomware attacks can cause multi-million dollar damage

Nikkei is one of the largest companies in the industry media worldwide. It almost counts 4 million subscribers to its digital and print services, with beyond 40 affiliate active in various sectors, from publishing to radio and television, from events to database and indexing services. So the scope of such an attack could really be huge.

It is not the first time that the group ends up in the crosshairs of criminals, in fact in the 2020 Nikkei was the victim of one high profile email scam: Apparently, the scammers managed to trick Nikkei America employees of the New York City office to relocate 29 million dollars to a bank account controlled by thugs.

Very often, those who operate in scams and online violations do not limit themselves to exploiting vulnerability in the software, hardware or firmware of companies, also focusing on little preparation of personnel in the field of cybersicurezza. For this reason, it is not enough to equip the systems with the best antivirus on the market, but it is also necessary train staff so that you can easily recognize attempts to phishing or other types of computer fraud. Only in this way will it be possible to effectively protect corporate systems.
