White Sox rout Royals 9-2; Jimenez drives in 4

Must Read

Eloy Jiménez had three hits and four RBIs, José Abreu homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 9-2 on Tuesday.

The White Sox didn’t make any major player deals before the trade deadline expired and will depend on improving their play if they hope to clinch their second straight AL Central title.

However, Chicago will first need to unseat Minnesota and Cleveland , which outrank it in the division.

Chicago’s victory wasn’t entirely flawless but it was still lopsided.

Jimenez singled and drove in three runs in the first inning and extended Chicago’s lead to 5-2 with a two-run double in the fourth.

He hit a long sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and then Abreu hit a two-run homer that took starter Brad Keller (5-12) off the mound. The ball went in the direction of the foul pole in left field.

Gavin Sheets hit a solo homer in the seventh, helping Chicago back above .500 with a 52-51 record. The White Sox have a home record of 24-29.

Lucas Giolito (7-6) pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits, in his first win at Guaranteed Rate Field since beating Boston on May 25.

The right-hander, who struck out seven and walked three, had a 6.75 ERA in his previous nine starts.

For the White Sox, Dominican Eloy Jiménez 3-3, one run scored, 4 produced. Cubans José Abreu 5-2, two runs scored, three RBIs; Yoán Moncada 3-0 and Yasmani Grandal 4-0.

For the Royals, Venezuelans Salvador Pérez 4-2, one RBI, and Maikel García 1-1.
