According to some rumors of recent days, Audi is said to be working on a new generation of Audi A3 which, unlike the current model, will arrive on the market exclusively in version electric with a debut starting in 2027. This indiscretion inevitably puts the future of Volkswagen Golf with endothermic engines and, in particular, of the sports variant GTIsymbol of a market segment that could be close to (forced) farewell.
The Volkswagen Golf will not abandon the Volkswagen range. The hatchback is one of the most iconic models of the brand and will continue to be offered on the market, adapting to the times and embracing the electrification trend that will represent the reference for the coming years in Europe. For the Golf GTI and its petrol engine, however, there may not be room for the next few years. After the current generation, in fact, the Volkswagen Golf GTI could definitely exit the market.
The Volkswagen Group is working on the new SSP platform (Scalable Systems Platform) that will be used for the electric of the future of all brands. On this basis, the new Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf will be born in a 100% electric version. For enthusiasts, however, there will be no way to buy a new GTI in the traditional version and, therefore, with a powerful petrol engine capable of offering a sporty drive at a much lower price than that of supercars.
For the moment, in any case, Volkswagen has not yet formalized its strategies for the future. More details could arrive over the next few months.
