Ohtani blows Judge’s 50th home run on another historic day for Pujols

Must Read

Not even Aaron Judge’s 50th home run this season could assure the victory for the Yankees against the Angels of Japanese Shohei Ohtani, on a Monday of baseball in the Major Leagues in which the Dominican Albert Pujos continued to adorn his legacy.

ANGELS 4-3 YANKEES

Yankees star outfielder Aaron Judge hit 50 home runs for the season, but Japan’s Shohei Ohtani also hit the ball over the fence as the Los Angeles Angels beat the New York team.

José Suárez (5-6) stopped the Yankees’ offense in two runs over six innings of six strikeouts to win the game.

Fellow Venezuelan Luis Rengifo sent the ball over the stands for the Angels.

For his part, Judge is two homers shy of the 52 he hit in his first full season in the big leagues in 2017 when he won the AL Rookie of the Year award.

TWINS 4-2 RED SOX

Colombian Gio Urshela hit a three-run double in the fifth inning and it was enough for the Minnesota Twins to effectively defend their home against the visiting Boston Red Sox.

Puerto Rican José Miranda scored twice while his compatriot Carlos Correa and Venezuelan Luis Arráez each had one scored.

Mexican Alex Verdugo drove in a run for the Red Sox.

CARDINALS 13-4 PHILIES

Tyler O’Neill hit two homers and drove in three runs and Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Pujols continued to hit home runs on his way to 700 homers as he hit 694 for his 15th homer of the season in his 22-year major league career.

With his tablazo this Monday, “La Maquina” set a new record for hitting a home run against 450 different pitchers in his MLB tour.

For the Reds, TJ Friedl, Stuart Fairchild (both solo) and Chuckie Robinson with a partner in circulation homered.

MARLINS 2-3 DODGERS

Freddie Freeman, who grounded out for a forced out to the second baseman that allowed the go-ahead run to reach the plate in the 10th inning, was key in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ victory over the Miami Marlins in extra innings.

Will Smith, who on Monday signed up to play for Team USA in next year’s World Baseball Classic, hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers.

Pablo López started for the Marlins and left without a decision after pitching six innings of two runs and six strikeouts.

Lewin Diaz drove in one lap for the Marlins.

BLUE JAWS 5-4 PUPS

Danny Jansen became the executioner of the Chicago Cubs, leading the Toronto Blue Jays attack, hitting a home run and driving in four runs, including the game-winner in the 11th inning.

Matt Chapman scored twice and drove in a lap while Raimel Tapia scored a run for the Blue Jays.

Willson Contreras drove in a return and Franmil Reyes had a run scored by the Cubs.

BREWERY 7-5 PIRATES

Keston Hiura sent the ball beyond the limits of the field in the ninth inning and in this way the Milwaukee Brewers left the Pittsburgh Pirates lying on the field.

Willy Adames scored twice and drove in one return for the Brewers.

Dominican Oneil Cruz put three runs on the scoreboard when he connected a shot that went over the wall in the Pirates, who also enjoyed a home run by Rodolfo Contreras, also from Quito.

DIAMONDBACKS 13-7 PHILIES

The Diamondbacks and Phillies got into a slugging duel in which Carson Kelly drove in four runs and Stone Garrett went deep and drove in two laps as Arizona ended up laying down the law against Philadelphia.

Emmanuel Rivera and Ketel Marte scored two runs and drove in one each for the Diamondbacks.

Kyle Schwarber hit the ball out of the park and had four runs on the scoreboard to be the standout in the Phillies’ offense.

GIANTS 5-6 PARENTS

Brandon Drury, who hit the ball behind the wall and drove in three runs, was instrumental in getting the San Diego Padres off to the right foot off their visit to the Giants in San Francisco.

For the Padres, Austin Nola drove in two runs, Josh Bell scored and drove in, and Juan Soto and Manny Machado each scored a run.

For the Giants, Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer and Thairo Estrada scored a run.
