White House: Republican abortion law would cause national crisis

WASHINGTON — The White House and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists say a Republican bill to ban abortions nationwide after the 15th week of pregnancy would endanger women’s health and have serious consequences for doctors.

“If approved and sanctioned, this bill would cause a national health crisis that would endanger the health and lives of women in all 50 states,” according to a preliminary analysis of the bill by Jennifer Klein, president of the Policy Council. White House Gender Committee, accessed by The Associated Press. “It would transform the practice of medicine by sending doctors to jail who did their duty to care for patients to the best of their knowledge.”

The measure introduced last week by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham proposes a nationwide ban with very few exceptions. The law has almost zero chances of approval in the Democratic-majority Congress. Republican leaders did not immediately endorse it, and Democrats say it is an alarming sign of what the party would attempt if it won control of Congress in November.

Many Americans believed that the constitutional right to abortion, enshrined by the Supreme Court nearly half a century ago, could not be overturned. But the court’s conservative majority struck down that protection a few months ago.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a nonprofit organization that represents more than 60,000 physicians across the country, raised concerns about the bill in a letter to the White House.

The college said the “arbitrary gestational age limit … is not based on science or medical evidence and would drastically interfere with the ability of patients to receive timely medical care, including prenatal care, care in case of miscarriage and abortion care.
