What does the United States flag symbolize and what is its origin

Must Read

Since 1777, the United States flag has been one of the most important and popular national symbols. We explain what it symbolizes and what its origin is.

This year, the United States flag turned 245 years old after on June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a law establishing an official flag for the new nation.

Resolved, That the flag of the United States be of thirteen stripes, alternating red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation” , said the resolution of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia at the time of introducing “the official American flag”.

Subsequently, the flag became one of the most important symbols until on August 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman officially declared June 14 as Flag Day.

What does the United States flag symbolize and what is its origin

The origin of the first American flag is unknown. Some historians believe it was designed by New Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkinson and sewn by Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross.

Still, it was rare for people to fly the flag until the Civil War broke out in 1861 , at which point the stars and stripes suddenly became a popular symbol in the North, according to Marc Leepson, author of the book Flag : An American Biography.

Between 1777 and 1960, the United States Congress passed several laws that changed the shape, design, and layout of the flag. In total, since the flag of 1777, there are 27 official versions of it. The current version dates from July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state.

As for the symbolism, the stripes represent the 13 original colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the USA. On the other hand, the colors of the flag are also symbolic; red symbolizes endurance and courage, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
