Blinken accuses the Taliban of violating the Doha agreement by harboring Zawahir

Washington – The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, accused the Taliban regime in Afghanistan on Monday of “seriously” violating the Doha agreement by having sheltered in Kabul the leader of Al Qaeda, Ayman al Zawahir.

In a statement, Blinken also accused the Taliban of having betrayed “repeated” assurances to the world that they would not allow Afghan territory to be used by terrorists to threaten the security of other countries.

“Given the Taliban’s unwillingness or inability to honor their commitments, we will continue to support the Afghan people with humanitarian aid and advocate for the protection of their human rights, especially of women and girls,” the Secretary of State said.

The United States killed this weekend the leader of Al Qaeda Ayman al Zawahir, who had been at the head of the terrorist group since the assassination of Osama bin Laden in 2011, in an anti-terrorist operation carried out by a drone in Kabul.

In a televised appearance from the balcony of the Blue Room of the White House late on Monday, US President Joe Biden said that with al-Zawahiri’s death “justice has been served” and that the world no longer he must fear this “ruthless and constant killer”.

The president addressed “all those around the world who want to harm the United States.” and assured them that his country will always remain vigilant and ready to act when it comes to defending the safety of American citizens.

Al Zawahiri was assassinated on Sunday morning in a residence in Kabul, specifically at 6:18 local time (1:48 GMT), when he was on the balcony of the residence where he was staying and a drone fired two missiles at him Hellfire.

According to the White House, only the leader of Al Qaeda died in the operation, and there was no collateral damage, not even the members of his family who were staying with him, something that Biden himself had insisted on several times and which he had set as one of the conditions to proceed with the attack.
