Job Vacancies in the US Increased to 11.3 Million in January, According to the BLS

The latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that the number of jobs available in the United States stood at 11.3 million jobs in January, from the previous figure of 10.9 million in December 2021, according to the Survey of Job Offers and Labor Rotation or JOLTS

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today that the number of jobs available in the United States changed little from the previous month, when it was 10.9 million and stood at 11.3 million jobs in January, according to the Job Offer Survey and Job Rotation or JOLTS.

According to BLS data, total hires and separations were little changed at 6.5 million and 6.1 million, respectively.

Within the separations, the rate of resignations decreased to 2.8% percent, while the rate of dismissals registered a change of 0.9% percent.

According to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) the annual number of hires and resignations in 2021 increased to 75.6 million and 47.8 million, respectively. The annual number of layoffs and layoffs decreased to 17 million in 2021.

On the last business day of January, the number and rate of job openings changed moderately by 11.3 million and 7%, respectively.

Industries in which job openings increased:

Other services sector: 136,000 new jobs
Durable goods manufacturing, 85,000

Job openings declined in several industries:

Lodging and food services: -288,000
Transport, storage and public services: -132,000
Federal Government -60,000

In January, the number and rate of total separations were little changed at 6.1 million and 4%, respectively. Among industries, total separations decreased for the Federal Government, with -13,000 jobs.

The number of resignations fell in January to 4.3 million, with -151,000 , while the dropout rate fell to 2.8%. Losses decreased in the Retail Trade sector with -69,000 and in the Information sector it was reduced with -20,000. In the Finance and Insurance sector, they increased by 30,000.

In January, the number and rate of layoffs changed moderately by 1.4 million and 0.9%, respectively. Layoffs and dismissals increased in Retail Trade, with 48,000 and in the Information sector with 40,000, but decreased in the Federal Government with -12,000.
