Recently came to Netflix the documentary series Jimmy Savile, a British Horror Story. Told over 2 episodes, it is the story of Savile, who was long one of England’s most beloved TV personalities. After his death in 2011, around 450 complaints of sexual abuse were known, with victims up to 5 years old.
The docuseries examines, through extensive archival footage, Savile’s relationship with the British people, the establishment and the media, which allowed him to fool an entire country for decades.
According to reported the magazine Hello! , several users found the series quite disturbing, and many asked Netflix to remove it from their recommendations. Because I don’t want to see Jimmy Saville on my screen, as I’m sure you would understand,” one user wrote.
The docuseries has been described as disturbing. “I’m watching the new Jimmy Savile documentary on Netflix and it’s the most disturbing piece of television I think I’ve ever seen,” another user wrote.
Who was Jimmy Savile?
Savile had built a highly successful career on television and radio after starting out in the late 1950s. He was knighted in 1990. He was the host of famous British shows including Top of the Pops and Jim’ll . Fix It. During his lifetime, Savile was widely praised for his personal qualities: he raised an estimated £40 million for charity. His funeral was broadcast on the BBC.
Behind his popular image was a predator targeting the young and vulnerable, many of whom told their stories after his death in 2011.
During his life there were complaints of abuse that he took it upon himself to silence. After his death independent and Scotland Yard investigations proved his guilt. It is estimated that he was one of the most prolific sexual predators in England.
