High school basketball player shot in face on Brooklyn street

  • A 17-year-old high school basketball player was fatally shot on a Brooklyn street Wednesday night, police said.

The teen was “hanging out” with several people outside 1225 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights when two gunmen approached the group and opened fire shortly after 6:15 p.m., authorities said.

The girl, who was an “unwanted target,” according to sources at The New York Post, was shot right in the face, so she was taken to Brookdale Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Other than the sly shot, no other injuries were reported. At the moment it is not clear who in the group the shooters were targeting shortly before killing the teenager.

The two suspects, who were wearing dark clothing, fled the scene and no arrests have been made at this time.

Six shell casings were recovered at the scene, according to police.

The deadly shooting is the latest in this week’s bloody period of citywide violence. Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, at least 16 people were injured in nine separate shootings.
