HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off series, House of the Dragon, is coming this August, and to get you ready, we’re going to go over everything we know.
Here’s the latest news based on what HBO has said and author George RR Martin’s own source material.
The House of the Dragon: What you need to know
- Based on the novel Fire and Blood
- It is set 170 years before the events of the original series.
- Focuses on the Targaryen civil war
The House of the Dragon is an HBO series that will come to the HBO Max streaming service. It is based on some of the events in George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones universe, specifically his companion novel Fire and Blood. It is separate from the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, which is the basis of the original series. Instead, Fire and Blood is presented as a history book of the Game of Thrones universe. It focuses specifically on the 300 years of rule by the Targaryen kings, with a large portion devoted to the story of the great Targaryen civil war known as the Dance with Dragons.
That civil war is the consequence of King Viserys Targaryen naming his eldest daughter Rhaenyra as heir to his throne, breaking Westeros’ misogynistic rules of inheritance. Two years after naming his Rhaenyra heir, the king takes a new bride, has a son, and dies still wanting his daughter to succeed him, thus beginning the game for the Iron Throne. However, this time both sides have dragons.
If you want to know more about the Dance with the Dragons, HBO has produced an animated short that is included in the Stories and Lore section of the DVD of the fifth season of Game of Thrones. It is narrated by Michelle Fairley, Pedro Pascal and Mark Addy. (You can watch it above, via an outside source on YouTube.)

House of the Dragon: Trailers
In July 2022, HBO released a new, longer trailer for its Game of Thrones prequel. You can see it at the top of this page. HBO has also recently released a three-minute teaser that includes behind-the-scenes footage from the series, as well as commentary from George RR Martin. You can watch that show below.
HBO released the first trailer for its massive new series in early May 2022, and it’s a good look at what to expect. Check it out below.
Several Targaryen characters and the germ of a succession battle are seen in the first trailer, along with glimpses of other important houses, such as the Starks.
The House of the Dragon: Cast and Crew
- George RR Martin is co-writer with Ryan Condal
- Condol is a co-showrunner with Miguel Sapochnik
- Several cast members have been confirmed
George RR Martin has created the television script with co-writer Ryan Condal. Condal is the co-director of the series along with Miguel Sapochnik. They are also executive producers. George RR Martin and Vince Gerardis will also executive produce.
Sapochnik, who has experience directing six Game of Thrones episodes, including Hardhome, The Long Night and The Battle of the Bastards, has directed the pilot and other episodes. House of the Dragon is Sapochnik’s first project as part of a global deal in which he is expected to develop and produce a series of content for both HBO and the HBO Max streaming service.
The story of the greatest civil war of the Targaryens is quite simple. The king, Viserys (Paddy Consodine), names his daughter Rhaenyra as heir when his first wife dies. Two years later, Viserys marries Alicent Hightower, who is the daughter of the Hand of the King. Soon Alicent gives birth to a son, Viserys dies, and the rest of Westeros have to decide who they support as the new ruler.
This brings us to Rhaenyra Targaryen, who should be one of the main characters in the series. Interestingly, she will be played by two actresses. Milly Alcock will play a younger version of Rhaenyra, presumably around the time she is named heir to the throne, while Emma D’Arcy will play an older version who is fighting a war for what she was promised. This suggests that the story will take place with flashbacks or a jump in time, which is a big change from the original series.
Here’s a look at the confirmed actors and characters they’ve played so far:
- Paddy Considine – Rey Viserys Targaryen
- Emma D’Arcy – Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen daughter of Viserys (Elder)
- Milly Alcock – Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen daughter of Viserys (Young)
- Rhys Ifans – Otto Hightower, Mano del Rey
- Olivia Cooke – Alicent Hightower, Daughter of Otto Hightower, second wife of King Viserys
- Matt Smith – Prince Daemon Targaryen, brother of Viserys Targaryen
- Tom Glynn-Carney – Prince Aegon Targaryen II,
- Steve Toussaint – Corlys Velaryon, or the Sea Serpent, the greatest explorer of Westeros and head of the richest house
- Eve Best – Rhaenys Targaryen, the wife of Corlys Valaryon and sister of King Viserys and Daemon Targaryen.
- Sonoyo Mizuno – Mysaria, a slave who rises through the ranks of Westeros
Although most of Game of Thrones is filmed in Northern Ireland, film crews have been seen in Cornwall, believed to be filming House of the Dragon. HBO also recently revealed the first photos from the series’ set (below), giving us an up-close look at some of the new characters.
Steve Toussaint will play Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Serpent.
He is the greatest explorer in the history of Westeros, and the riches he brought back from his adventures made House Velaryon one of the wealthiest families in the Seven Kingdoms. The Velaryons have been one of the Targaryens’ oldest allies, dating back before the destruction of Valyria.
Otto Hightower and Alicent Hightower
Rhys Ifans will play Otto Hightower, while Olivia Cooke will play his daughter, Alicent.
Otto serves as Hand of the King and is one of the most powerful figures in the Seven Kingdoms when House of the Dragon takes place. His daughter Alicent is considered one of the great beauties of the Seven Kingdoms and ends up marrying King Viserys after the death of his first wife.
Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen
Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith will play two of the Targaryens central to the story. D’Arcy will play King Viserys Targaryen’s firstborn daughter, Rhaenyra. Viserys names her his heir even though Westeros’ rules of succession exclude women.
Matt Smith will play Daemon, Viserys’ brother. Daemon has his own dragon of his, Ceraxes, and is a formidable warrior in his own right. Finally, Rhaenyra and Daemon marry as part of the Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon: Are other shows being prepared?
HBO is developing a sequel series to Game of Thrones that will focus on continuing the adventures of Jon Snow.
According to the report, things are still at a very early stage, though actor Kit Harrington is in line to reprise his role from George RR Martin’s TV adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire if the sequel goes ahead.
Three years after the end of Game of Thrones, Jon Snow’s still-unnamed sequel series would actually represent HBO’s second spinoff. The first, The House of the Dragon, will hit screens in August. Details surrounding this latest sequel don’t seem to be finalized yet, as no members of the creative team have been rumored at this time. However, even the concept itself is intriguing.
While House of the Dragon is a prequel that focuses on the 300-year rule of the Targaryen family, a Jon Snow sequel would apparently take place not too far from the end of Game of Thrones. So it could feature many of the same surviving characters and revive plot lines that were left up in the air after Jon Snow – spoiler alert – was sent back to the Night’s Watch for killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). As we say, there’s no timeline for when we can expect a Snow-directed sequel to arrive – and, at this point, it’s certainly not a sure thing that it will even develop.
