After months of stock problems, PS5 saw a resurgence in April, when Lego Star Wars became the best-selling game in Europe.
Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 have had inventory issues since they launched a year and a half ago, but Sony went to great lengths to have more supplies this Christmas and that means that the console has been particularly difficult to get hold of this year.
It also means that Xbox has often sold more than PlayStation 5 in both the US and Europe. But according to new sales figures from Europe, Sony may now be in the lead again.
However, that hasn’t stopped Nintendo Switch to be the best-selling console in Europe in April, with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga being the best-selling game.
According to GSD data, nearly 290,000 consoles and 10.8 million games were sold across Europe last month, although the figure was down 15% from March and April 2021.
GamesIndustry.biz data is not complete for all countries and does not include Germany and the UK, the two largest markets in Europe.
However, a separate UK chart for April shows the same story, with 92,000 consoles sold and a very similar drop of 18% from March 2022.
the only big difference in the UK is that PlayStation 5 sales beat those of the Switch, with Sony’s next-gen console seeing a 59% increase from March, although it’s still down 51%. compared to the same period last year.
Xbox Series X and S are in third place in the UK, despite being first in March.
In other words, the situation is highly variable and which console is ahead is purely a matter of which one has more stock.
This situation is likely to continue into the next year as well, with inventories rising and falling from month to month.
