From London to New York in three hours: this is Overture, an ultra-fast plane with four engines

Must Read

Overture is the great project of the American company Boom Supersonic . It is a sleek new airliner, a super-fast Concorde -like aircraft that hopes to revolutionize the way people fly and cut transatlantic travel time in half.

Dubbed the “son of the Concorde,” the Overture aircraft will be able to carry between 65 and 80 business-class passengers at twice the speed of current aircraft . The company claims that its latest aircraft model will reduce the flight time from New York to London to just 3.5 hours and from Los Angeles to Sydney to just over 8 hours.

In addition, Boom claims that the plane will purportedly run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel and travel at speeds of Mach 1.7 on water and just under Mach 1 on land.

The company said Overture is the culmination of 26 million hours of simulated software design work , five wind tunnel tests, and the careful evaluation of 51 full design iterations, resulting in an economical and efficient supersonic airliner. environmentally sustainable.

“Aviation hasn’t seen a giant leap in decades. Overture is revolutionary in its design, and it will fundamentally change the way we think about distance,” said Boom founder and CEO Blake Scholl. “With more than 600 routes worldwide, Overture will make the world dramatically more accessible to tens of millions of passengers.”

Main features: Quad-engine design: Overture will have four powerful wing-mounted engines that will allow it to achieve a cruise speed of Mach 1.7 on water and just under Mach 1 on land. Additionally, the four-engine design reduces noise and costs for aircraft operators. The location of the engines was selected to meet the most stringent passenger safety requirements.

Quieter Operation: At liftoff, Overture will use the world’s first automated noise reduction system. The aircraft will fly without afterburner, meeting the same regulatory noise levels as the latest subsonic aircraft. These noise reduction efforts will deliver a quieter experience for both passengers and airport communities.

Contoured Fuselage: In accordance with the principle of area regulation, the Overture’s fuselage has a larger diameter towards the front of the aircraft and a smaller diameter towards the rear. Boom has applied this design technique to minimize drag and maximize fuel efficiency at supersonic speeds.

Gull Wings: The aircraft’s wings are sculpted to improve supersonic performance, as well as subsonic and transonic handling. In addition, the shape of the wings helps ensure safety and stability at any speed.

Carbon Composite Construction: The Overture will incorporate carbon composite materials throughout the majority of the construction, which are lighter, stronger and more thermally stable than traditional metal construction. Carbon composites can also be made with very complex curvature, which contributes to the aircraft’s aerodynamic efficiency.

Net Zero Carbon: Overture has been developed from the ground up to be a Net Zero Carbon aircraft, flying 100% SAF. Sustainability is built into every aspect of Overture, from design and production to flight and end-of-life recycling.
