Finland, Prime Minister Sanna Marin : “The nuclear threat is very serious and cannot be attributed to a single region”

Finland fears a “very serious” nuclear threat and therefore needs greater security thanks to NATO membership. This was stated by Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin during the press conference in Helsinki in which, together with the President, Sauli Niinisto, she announced the country’s official request to join the Alliance: a proposal that will first be submitted to the Helsinki Parliament .

“We would not have made this choice if we had not thought it would strengthen our national security: the nuclear threat is very serious but it cannot be isolated to a single region,” said the premier. “I think being inside NATO will give us security because NATO also has nuclear weapons and there would be an answer if Russia used them, so this decision strengthens us, it doesn’t weaken us,” she added. “We hope that Parliament confirms the decision to apply for NATO membership in the coming days,” added Marin. For his part, Niinisto, questioned on the reaction by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to the Finnish request to join NATO, said: “Russia’s reaction to Finland’s accession to NATO has been more moderate than expected. But what is certain is that relations with Russia will change ”.
