That a worker in the United States works tirelessly and without vacations seems one of the best professional decisions, however, it is terrible because it affects your finances and your health
Competition in the world of work is getting fiercer everywhere. The pressure can give workers the false impression that they will be more valued if they sacrifice their vacations. Most fake thing. And worse, not only are they left without the opportunity to rest and recharge, they could also be losing money in the United States.
Depending on what you do, most American workers receive compensation for Paid Time Off (PTO) days, which are days you get paid even when you don’t work, such as when you go on vacation or become disabled. When you do not use these PTO days and you change jobs, the company is not obliged to pay you, that is, it is money and rest lost for you.
In 2018, Americans left 768 million paid vacation days unused, and 55% percent of Americans did not use all of their paid vacation time, according to the American Travel Association.
With day-to-day problems, inflation, recession forecasts, and with it, especially the fear of unemployment, many workers believe that taking time off from work would show their employers little commitment and that they are replaceable. On a personal level, there is also the fear that by not going to work for a few days, no matter how much they pay you, you could miss out on a promotion if you are not in the office or work from home.
There is also a psychological aspect that could have been instilled from childhood, with the mentality of earning rewards based on their performance in school. Younger generations seem to be feeling this pressure more. According to a report released earlier this year, millennials and Gen Z were the groups least likely to use vacation time, and appeared to be much more vacation deprived than those over 50. In addition, women are more exhausted at work and vacation deprived than men in the United States.
Not taking paid vacation days or PTO is like giving away time and money to your employer, a double loss. When workers don’t use their vacation days to take a trip, for example, that’s money that isn’t being spent in the US economy on hotels, restaurants, entertainment, and more.
You can also affect your health. Working tirelessly one day is going to charge you a bill in the form of illnesses. Maybe not right now, but if you don’t know how to handle pressure, you could cause conditions such as:
• sleep deprivation
• Cardiovascular diseases
• You weaken your immune system
All these ailments will require medicines and treatments that, however small they may be, translate into money. If you have employer health insurance, the financial burden may not be as great, but you would still have to pay for the health services and products you have used.
As you can see, taking vacations is not a luxury, it is a necessity that will prevent you from losing money and other important aspects of life such as your health, your well-being and your family.
