With just a few days to go until House of the Dragon arrives on HBO Max, and fans are already jumping with excitement. Based on the best-selling novel Fire and Blood, this long-awaited Game of Thrones spin-off will take us back to the epic fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin and will take place 200 years before the events of GOT, during the heyday of the Targaryen house.
This new drama, fantasy, romance and action television series is directed by Clare Kilner, Miguel Sapochnik, Geeta Patel and Greg Yaitanes, and has Ryan Condal, George R. R. Martin and Miguel Sapochnik as screenwriters. The main cast of House of the Dragon includes Eve Best, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy.
Game of Thrones was a success from its premiere in 2011, and until its conclusion in 2019, the show remained among the most watched. Leaving aside the final season, which many consider a disastrous close, GOT is certainly a series difficult to overcome and its legacy continues intact to this day. GOT presented the audience with a brutal mix of uncensored drama, violence, and sex scenes that together led to the show becoming a hit.
Now, it seems that House of the Dragon plans to follow this formula, but it seems that the last category could exceed expectations. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone (via Indiewire), Matt Smith, who will be seen in the series as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Viserys I’s younger brother, said that he thinks the show includes too many sex scenes and wondered if so many of these were necessary. The actor told the outlet:
You find yourself wondering, ‘Do we need another sex scene?’ And they say, ‘Yes, we do. I guess you have to ask yourself, ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you watering down the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’ And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, just as they were written.
Later, the outlet asked him if his character, Daemon Targaryen, has too many sexual scenes in the show, to which the actor replied:
Yeah, maybe too many, if you ask me.
As well as Smith, there are other members of the House of the Dragon team who have expressed their opinion about the sexual scenes included in the program, although approaching the subject from another point of view. Following the brutal sexual violence shown in GOT, one of House of the Dragon’s showrunners, Miguel Sapochnik, said that the spin-off had no intention of moving away from depictions of sexual violence.
