The NFL offseason has been marked by changes . Nine players who were once selected to the Pro Bowl have already changed teams and could be 10, as Deebo Samuel has asked the 49ers to trade him, as reported by ESPN ‘s Jeff Darlington .
A bombshell news just over a week after the Draft and that comes after San Francisco has not been able to agree on a contract extension with the receiver, who in the 2021 season caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards (fifth highest in the NFL despite being #26 in catches), leading with 18.2 receiving yards. He also had 59 more carries for 365 yards and 14 total touchdowns, being named to the All Pro team and the Pro Bowl.
The 49ers have declared to the press that they want to renew the player, but Samuel would have withdrawn from the negotiating table and wants to seek new horizons.
All 9 Pro Bowlers traded in 2022. Deebo Samuel 10th?
- Carson Wentz (QB) from Colts to Commanders
- Russell Wilson (QB) from Seahawks to Broncos
- Amari Cooper (WR) from Cowboys to Browns
- Khalil Mack (OLB) from Bears to Chargers
- Tyreek Hill (WR) from Chiefs to Dolphins
- Deshaun Watson (QB) from Texans to Browns
- Matt Ryan (QB) from Falcons to Colts
- Davante Adams (WR) from Packers to Raiders
- Yannick Ngakoue (DE) from Raiders to Colts
Samuel was selected in the second round of the 2019 Draft and in 2022 he would be in the final year of his rookie contract , which would pay him $4.89 million next season, according to Over The Cap . 34 receivers would count more against the salary cap than Deebo next season.
Figures far from what he considers he deserves and what the highest paid receivers in the league earn, such as Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams , who were also traded this offseason and will earn an average of 30 and 28 million , respectively, for their new contracts with Dolphins and Raiders.
2021 was Samuel’s best season in the NFL. Despite being on the second-lowest passing offense in the league and throwing the second-shortest passes on average, the receiver made magic with the ball in his hands. Since he came into the league, Deebo is the best in yards after receiving (9.8) and yards after first contact (4.6), according to Sharp Football . That earned him occasional running back use last season after multiple team injuries in the backfield.
Deebo Samuel’s nod to the Cowboys
Minutes after the news broke, a Twitter user @shane_2104 posted an edited image of Samuel in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, which the receiver liked on Twitter.
Dallas traded Amari Cooper this offseason, and while they re-signed Michael Gallup and signed James Washington, they have a hole at the position. The biggest problem is that the Lone Star team has only 15 million against the salary cap, so they would have to do numbers to square the extension that Deebo wants.
