Chinese court executes man who set ex-wife on fire

A court in southwest China’s Sichuan province on Saturday executed a man convicted of murder for setting fire to his ex-wife in a case that has sparked outrage and horror across the country as an extreme case of violence. domestic.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture said in a brief statement posted online Saturday morning that it had carried out the execution of Tang Lu.

Tang set his ex-wife on fire in September 2020 while she was livestreaming on Douyin, a short video platform. The 30-year-old woman, known online as Lamu, died of her injuries a few weeks later.

Lamu had given a glimpse into his life in short videos and live broadcasts on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, run by the same parent company. In her videos, she showed the Sichuan countryside and her life. She was of Tibetan ethnicity and used to wear traditional Tibetan clothing in her posts.

Lamu’s sister had told Paper, a Shanghai-based official media outlet, that her sister suffered domestic abuse from Tang for years and had decided to divorce as a result.

The case sparked widespread condemnation and outrage across the country at the plight of women facing abusive marriages. Police arrested the man a few days after news of the attack spread.

Tang had appealed the decision but lost in January this year.
