Chechens in Ukraine: Putin’s Psychological Weapon Could Backfire

The Chechens have acquired a reputation as fierce warriors since the two wars that opposed them to Russia, the first from 1994 to 1996 and the second from 1999 to 2014 .

This is the most violent conflict in Europe and the former USSR since World War II.

These warriors are currently present in Ukraine on both sides of the front line. The Chechen refugees in Ukraine since the wars which ravaged their country support the armed forces of this country. Their involvement went almost unnoticed. On the other hand, the announcement with great fanfare on February 25, 2022 of the sending of Ramzan Kadyrov’s troops to Ukraine to fight alongside the Russian army caused a stir in the Western media .

Ramzan Kadyrov, president of the Republic of Chechnya since 2007, also claims to be present in Ukraine himself . A staunch supporter of Vladimir Putin, he brought Chechnya back into the fold of the Russian Federation using terror as a weapon of government. He is the head of several tens of thousands of men, nicknamed the Kadyrovtsy .
