An Omega watch for 250 francs: Swatch makes it possible

The luxury watch brand Omega is teaming up for a collection with the brand Swatch, which is known for cheap watches. The focus is on the legendary «Moonwatch».

One could almost think that one had been taken in by an early April Fool’s joke: Omega and Swatch are teaming up. Even though they both belong to the Swatch Group, the two brands have little in common. Omega is known for luxurious timepieces with complex automatic movements, while Swatch focuses on playful, affordable timepieces, mostly with quartz movements. Now they are launching their joint collection Bioceramic MoonSwatch.

It is inspired by the Omega cult chronograph «Speedmaster», which was the first watch to be worn on the moon and is therefore also called «Moonwatch». According to Omega, the collaboration came about because countless collaborations had already shown that cooperation between luxury and street style brands results in innovative products that embody the best of both worlds.

The brand also says that the shared mission is also a respectful acknowledgment of the company that once brought the Swiss watch industry, which was suffering from the quartz revolution, back on track. Omega’s long and distinguished history might have ended without the vision and courage of Swatch. “The ‘MoonSwatch’ collection pays tribute to our industry’s rescuers in a fun, accessible way,” said Omega CEO Raynald Aeschlimann. He also sees the entry-level models for around 250 francs as the first step towards the Omega original, which costs many times as much.

Colorful celestial bodies

The eleven watch models are all named after celestial bodies, from Earth to Venus to Mars. They are made of “bioceramic”, a mix of two-thirds ceramic and one-third castor oil-based material. All the important design features of the “Moonwatch” are present: the asymmetrical case, the famous tachymeter scale with the dot above the ninety and the characteristic Speedmaster totalisers, all of which are fully functional. But instead of an automatic movement, a quartz movement ticks inside. Their planet is shown on the watch’s battery compartment. The sporty Velcro strap completes the astronaut look.
