Airbnb will allow its employees to live and work virtually anywhere in the world, after adopting a telecommuting policy to attract employees and ensure flexibility.

The company, which contacts private property owners for temporary housing and is headquartered in San Francisco, said Thursday afternoon that under the new policy, employees will be able to work from the office, home or while traveling in 170 countries.

Staff will still have to meet in person for regular meetings and team events, CEO Brian Chesky said in a message to employees. Wages will not change if employees decide to move.

Employees can spend up to three months working in each country they visit each year, but will still need a permanent address for tax and payroll reasons, which include a “mountain of complexities,” Chesky added, but said the company is working on a solution. open source.

The new policy will put the company in a better position to hire and retain the best people by not “limiting the source of talent to a radius around the commute to our offices,” Chesky explained. Remote work and flexibility “will become the predominant way we all work 10 years from now,” he added.

Millions of people have started working remotely during the pandemic to limit their potential exposure to COVID-19. Companies are starting to ask those workers to return to the office, at least in hybrid mode, including other tech companies like Facebook’s parent Meta and Microsoft.
